Four songs 4 you
Hello!
I propose an unofficial Simp Lagoon revival in These Tough Times™. Don’t call it a comeback (truly, because who knows).
I’m here largely because I’ve found myself crashing out the past few days. News is already a tough business, but lately it’s been gut punch after gut punch in a way I’ve never experienced in my life. I figure it’s a good time to do the things that feed my soul.
I would love to share with you some of the things I’m listening to.
Nausicaä (Love Will Be Revealed) x Cameron Winter - I’m a big fan of Geese, but admittedly did not realize Cameron Winter was the band’s frontman before I hit play on his debut album. You need not more than a single note to recognize the depth and texture of his voice, though. This song is the highlight of the album for me. The instrumentation has a real Cat Stevens quality that I personally really dig, and he hits an impressively dynamic range of peaks and valleys throughout the song. The roll-out for this album was vaguely slow at first having dropped in early December, but it’s now becoming wildly popular among the Cool Kids, so hop to it.
something new x cumgirl8 - Another immensely dynamic song from up-and-coming New Yorkers! Maybe there is a scene brewing. I think I’m addicted to pinpointing who new artists and songs remind me of, and I can’t tell if that’s tacky or not -- but this song has vocal tinges of The Raincoats and a certain instrumental tone evocative of the coming-of-age essence of a Regine-led Arcade Fire song from the Funeral and Suburbs eras. They’re about to tour with of Montreal, so surely also a group to watch. Whether they’ll be crippled by their AIM screenname of a moniker is to be seen.
Blurry x RIP Swirl - This is just an instrumental track from Berlin DJ RIP Swirl, who I just recently started listening to. Blurry is the titular opening track to the album and it plays like one of those workouts where people (not me) run on a high-intensity incline for like five minutes and then wind down for one. Gets the blood pumpin’ and then mellows you out, not much more to say here!
Manhattan x Cat Power - A bittersweet promenade through the streets of Manhattan! It reminds me of that feeling when I compare how my brain processed the city when I first arrived vs how it started to orient itself via memories and landmarks, only to just evaporate as the city changes. Even the absence of scaffolding that seemed like a permanent fixture can throw your whole month off. A spiritual companion to LCD Soundsystem’s All My Friends, I say.
That’s all for now, for who knows how long! Would love to hear what you guys are listening to, what’s getting you excited, what’s up-and-coming, what old gems you’re returning to, etc! I think we all need to share the things that move us right now.
Stay safe, stay warm! See ya!
