Today’s song rec: “Let The Lights On” x Sorry
I saw Sorry live last November. The day after the show, I ran into half of the band stumbling out of a bar in Brooklyn and I said, “are you Sorry??” which I’m sure sounded like an insane aggression to my friends. But they were, and they invited me to have a drink with them. I said I’d meet them at the bar they were off to after getting a drink with my friends first, then didn’t go. I vaguely regret it.
This is my favorite song off of their latest album, Anywhere But Here. The opening to this song is a chaotic clashing of sounds that hush into each lustrous, self-assured verse and creep back up in every chorus like the uncertainty in all of love’s ebb and flows. I think love feels like a never-ending panic attack that requires you to stumble around before you really glide, but in the context of the full album, it’s really a tragically sad opener despite — or maybe because of — its optimistic ending. Everything about this song is absolutely manic, with desperate i love you’s, i need you’s, i found you’s, while the rest of the album is a depressing (but lyrically fantastic!) ode to love lost.
Really, I recommend the whole album. And if you see the band stumbling out of a bar in Brooklyn and they invite you out, maybe give it a go.
