Today’s song rec is: Hate Me x Charlotte Plank
A fresh London-based collective of young female and non-binary musicians has bewitched my speakers. Aside from committing to creating a safe and supportive space for burgeoning artists, the people involved with Loud LDN have few parameters to restrain them — they’ve deconstructed any box they could have been shoved into, their styles ranging from Laurel Smith’s raging fuzzy trap to Ellie Dixon’s playfully transparent Lily Allen-esque pop. My favorite pick from the group, however, is Charlotte Plank.
Plank has a very defined and satisfying drum n’ bass style that’s perfectly woven into nostalgic pop punk rifs. She feels very much cut from the same cloth as PinkPanthress, but with distinctly grimier undertones and more mania in her angst. “Hate Me” would no doubt be on Effy Stonem’s iPod nano in the early aughts, which is to say that Plank seems to be part of a really glamorous zoomer-led rave revival re-revival (lol, what is postmodernity if not the infinitely recycled) that I find super hot. Raves in Texas are cringe and slimy and simply not good, but there’s something about the authentic British rave that’s infinitely more alluring and romantic, and this really scratches the itch of pretending I’ll ever go to one.
aaaand, because I didn’t do one Friday… here’s a bonus:
Ex-Boyfriend Beat x Skinned Teen
I thought of this song when I heard Paramore’s new attempt at French-infused post-punk, which I felt obscenely indifferent about. Opt for these British riotgrrrl icons instead.
I’ll leave it at that because I am truly utterly exhausted. See u tomorrow!
